
The future pope was born Karol Wojtila in 1920 in the town of Wadowice, 40km from Krakow. He would become one of the most iconic figures the world has seen as Pope John Paul II and a national hero to the Polish people.
Things to see and do in Wadowice
The Wadowice tour takes you to this small city of approx 20,000 people located approx 30 miles Southwest of Krakow. There is plenty to do and see in Wadowice including a museum devoted to John Paul II which is situated in what was the Pope's house in Wadowice. This exhibition illustrates and commemorates John Paul and his life and work in Poland until he left Krakow for Rome in 1978.
Wadowice is full of places and buildings linked to the Popes childhood and youth, such as The church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary located next to the Pope's house and it is possible to take a walking tour called the 'Karol Wojtyła's route' which takes you to all the places of interest.
