The town of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) is located 75km to the west of Krakow. Better known by its German name, Auschwitz, the now sleepy and nondescript city of Oswiecim is where the Nazis executed an estimated 1.1 million people during the Second World War, 90% of them Jews. Although a visit to the two camps in Auschwitz is often traumatic, it's also an opportunity to learn more about the worst human atrocity of the 20th century.
