Things You Must See In Krakow

The Market square (Rynek or Old town square)

Measuring 200 x 200 metres, the old town square in Krakow lays claim to being the largest in Europe and was originally laid out in 1257, the year in which Krakow received it's city status. In the centre of the square is the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall), which was built in the 14th century as a shopping market, and still serves the same purpose. Nowadays, it is the best place for tourist souvenirs such as amber, jewellery, chess sets and other trinkets. On the first floor is a museum dedicated to Polish art.

The town hall tower, also know locally as the clock tower, is the only remnant of the town hall, which was knocked down in 1820. Its cellars, which once housed a prison, are now home to a bar and theatre, while the top floor is open to visitors.

The largest and oldest church in Krakow is St Mary's Basilica, which dates from the 13th century. Every hour, a bugle call is heard from a top window of the church, a tradition which dates back almost 800 years.

The undoubted focal point of the city, the Rynek is constantly buzzing with tourists and locals. Stages are erected almost every weekend throughout the year for concerts, and popular markets are held during Christmas and Easter. During summer, the many cafes and restaurants on the square set up outdoor seating and tables.

Da Vinci (Czartoryski Museum)

This museum attracts visitors largely because of it's possession of Leonardo Da Vinci's painting, Lady with an Ermine. It also houses a wide array of Polish artworks and Greek, Roman and Egyptian relics. Free entry on Thursdays.

Wawel Castle

Once the seat of the royal family of Krakow, Wawel Castle sits on a hill overlooking the Wisla River and is nestled between the Old Town and the Jewish district of Kazimierz. Comprising several different museums, entry is limited to a certain number of tickets each day, so arriving early is recommended. Wawel castle is perhaps the most famous land mark in Poland, and should not be missed.

The Jewish District (Kazimierz)

The home of Krakow's Jewish population for 500 years, Kazimerz fell into disrepair following the eviction of the Jews during the second World War, but has recently undergone something of a transformation.

Jewish history is abundant, from synagogues to cemeteries and museums depicting the tragic events of the second world war. Kazimierz is characterized by three striking squares and has more recently become the bohemian district of krakow attracting local artists with new bars and cafes appearing on a weekly basis.

The district makes a great alternative and perhaps more sophisticated location for going out as opposed to the rowdier bars and night clubs of the market square and is becoming more and more favoured by local Poles, looking to escape the usual tourist traps. Check out Plac Nowy on a Saturday night in the summer to see Kazimierz at its peak.
